Iceland

Who wouldn’t want to explore Iceland.. In my research I realized Iceland offers unique experiences in summer and in winter. It also helps that we do have a direct flight from SEA to Keflavik airport

Why I chose winter? Well I found myself with unused vacation end of 2018. I also read a blog that describe winter time in Iceland and orange hue that stays for the 4-5 hours of sunlight. A chance to see Northern Lights and it being cheaper and less crowded during winter months

I traveled Dec 17-25 right before Christmas. I booked myself an Airbnb in the heart of Reykavik besides the city center. I landed early morning on 18th. The check in time was 3pm and I underestimated Iceland winter. Yes there is the gulf stream still it was very cold probably in 20s.. no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t stay in the airport and took a shuttle to Reykyavik. I loved watching the dreamy scenery with green snow capped mountains amidst the landscape completely devoid of trees. 11 am felt like 5 am in the morning. From the bus stop I had a 3 mile walk to my Airbnb. I chose to walk and not take a taxi as I thought I wanted to explore the city.. In spite of the cold I loved every minute of it.. On the way I crossed residential neighborhood where everyone decorated their houses with Christmas lights. then on to a vast lake with lots of ducks, swans. From there I turned onto the town center including town hall. However the last few hours before my check in time felt unbearable because of my fatigue from travel and walking all day long. Note to self: next time I am in Iceland I should make a reservation a day earlier

Food: They had a brownish Rye bread which tasted really good in combination with lamb beat. I also became a fan of their local Turmeric Café with Oatmilk and drank it almost every day

Wool: Icelandic Wool is wold renowned. I bought couple of socks, sweaters, mittens and caps some of which I gave away to my sister. The wool there is very light weight, soft to touch and cozy to feel

Northern Lights:

Hike

Beach and Lighthouse

Blue Lagoon
